Chapters of Faith and a Mother’s Role

| |

I often write about chapters — the ones I’ve read, the ones I’ve lived, and the ones I’ve written, both published and not yet published—someday in God’s time, reflecting on how each one reveals God’s guidance and The Blessed Mother’s presence in my faith journey.

I think of how many new chapters I have turned to, the chapters that have come to an end — painfully or joyfully, with hesitation and reluctance and in celebration, or turning the page quickly to get to the next moment in a book or in life. Some chapters are meant to be savored, and we linger over the scenes or details, wondering how God writes such magnificent stories, how compelling words and deeds unfold both on the page and in our lives.

Last year, when I shared that I had published a chapter in a collaboration book on the saints, I wrote:

“It’s not always easy to lay a new path, turn the pages, and write new chapters in a life you didn’t expect. The further I move from a chapter that closed, the more I see how God has guided me through unexpected twists and turns, and how my kids are walking their own journeys—different from what we imagined, yet filled with grace. Each of us is writing chapters that look different from what we imagined. Some are messy and complicated, others surprising and hopeful.

Yet, through it all, I see God’s hand—guiding, shaping, and offering His grace, which I hope encourages you to trust His plan in your life.”

Though I am once again finding myself in new chapters, those words are still true.

I look back a year later and can say the same for where I am now—the work I’ve done to get here, the tears I’ve shed, the suffering I’ve endured, the interior healing woven into each new day and each new chapter being written for me by the Great Author. Maybe you can look back and see your own growth and healing too.

Some stories are easier to write. The chapter in Cloud of Witnesses I wrote about a saint—St. Charbel—last year was one I had to dig deep to explore and share about a personal and painful experience.

This new chapter was less painful and, in many ways, more stunning. I was able to look back over my life and see how Our Blessed Mother has kept me close — her presence offering comfort and reassurance, just as Jesus said in His final words to John and to the Church: “Behold, your Mother.” Those words have taken on more meaning for me as the years unfold, especially as I notice the quiet ways Mary has mothered my heart.

In reflecting on the profound relationship between Mary and the Church, John 19:26–27 resonates deeply:

“When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, here is your son,’ and to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’”

In that moment—at the foot of the Cross, in the midst of pain, surrender, and love—Jesus entrusted His Mother to us. He gave her to the Church, not as an abstract symbol, but as a real, living Mother who walks with her children through every chapter of their lives. My discovery of this came through the Immaculate Conception.

St. John Paul II expressed this beautifully when he said,
“Mary is the mother of the Church. She is the mother of all disciples.

That truth has woven itself into my understanding of her role in my life. Mary has always been present, though I did not always recognize her. She has been there in the quiet ways — guiding my faith, shaping my motherhood, helping me endure the trials that I could never have faced alone. I see now how she covered me in moments I didn’t yet know how to name, gently forming the foundation of trust that would carry me into the hardest pages of my story.

Her presence became even more personal during Jon’s final weeks and days. Mary showed up in a way that brought him peace, and I believe she was also giving me comfort for what was ahead. It was her way of reminding me that she walks with us, just as her Son promised she would — standing at the foot of our crosses as she once stood at His.

That moment, and the tenderness wrapped within it, deepened my understanding of what it means to be held by a mother—even when the world feels unsteady beneath your feet. Mary’s quiet companionship became a place of refuge, reminding me that love remains, even in the midst of sorrow.

When pondering whether to contribute a chapter on Mary, the decision came quickly.

Fiat.

It felt natural to choose the Immaculate Conception. Mary’s influence on my life has been as real and steady as my own mother’s, even though I didn’t always know it at the time. And this feels like the perfect time to share this story — here in the first week of Advent, as the Feast of the Immaculate Conception draws near.Looking back, I can see how she was present through so many pieces of my story — quietly guiding my faith, my motherhood, and my life.

As St. Louis de Montfort so beautifully expresses, “To Jesus through Mary.” These words revealed the truth and beauty of Mary being an Immaculate—unstained—vessel to bring our Lord and Savior into the world, an important Church teaching. Those words also inspired a portion of my chapter.

Writing this chapter helped me see how long Mary has been part of my journey and formation. She has shaped so much of who I am and how I keep going, especially in the hardest seasons.
